WHAT IS PSD?

Millions of women feel stuck trying solve their most frustrating problems that they’ve tried everything to fix, so they can break through to a new level of success in their work, relationships, and health. It’s not their failure. There’s a missing piece in therapy, coaching, peak performance, leadership development, personal growth, and self-help. Without it, we cannot fully heal and claim the lives we desire.

This missing piece is a condition that has us playing smaller than we are, focusing on surviving instead of thriving, being out of touch with our true desires and needs — let alone ways of getting them met. It affects our minds, bodies, nervous systems, choices, and actions.

It’s as pervasive as it is invisible. And it’s not our fault. In fact, it has nothing to do with us.

This elephant in the room—that traditional therapy, coaching, and self-help ignore—didn’t even have a name. So I called it out and termed it Patriarchy Stress Disorder® (PSD).

What is that? I’m glad you asked. You see, it’s never been safe to be a woman. Historically, it’s been particularly unsafe to be an outspoken, attractive, successful woman. Our nervous systems carry the intergenerational trauma of the war on women’s bodies, minds, and spirits, our freedoms, choices, and desires.

The more a woman breaks through the inner and outer glass ceilings and grows in her visibility and success, the more her nervous system drives up its hyper-activation, hyper-vigilance:

Our nervous system perceives increased success as increased threat.

Let this sink in for a moment.

When successful women have trouble sleeping (thank you, Arianna Huffington, for embarking on the sleep crusade)—it’s a function of our nervous systems being in hyper-activation. Adrenal fatigue, thyroid issues are also frequent products of chronic stress.

Weight gain often serves as an unconscious defense mechanism — protecting us from too much unsafe attention. Shonda Rhimes in her brilliant book Year of Yes nailed the truth behind the weight gain that at the time went hand in hand with her success: “Fat and successful seemed much less threatening.”

The fact that our nervous systems constantly signal to us that we’re not safe, is the hidden reason why women hesitate to lean in and play big—and when they do, their health and relationships often take a toll, making it impossible for a high-achieving woman to have it all and thrive.

Years of my own search eventually have brought me to mind-body trauma healing that has transformed my life. All my clients I’ve introduced it to have also experienced profound results, fast. This got me wondering, what was the trauma that ALL women shared? Trauma so insidious and so invisible, that had not registered on their therapists’ or their own awareness radars for decades?

Research on intergenerational transmission of trauma kept coming into my view, and the dots connected. For millennia, women have been oppressed. Oppression is traumatic. This trauma has been recorded and passed down through the DNA for generations.

That’s how I discovered Patriarchy Stress Disorder—intergenerational, collective, and personal trauma of oppression,

the invisible inner barrier to women’s happiness and fulfillment.

This is not a mindset problem. It cannot be fixed with affirmations. (Research shows that if affirmations go against the experience of the body / nervous system, they may trigger anxiety and panic—I’ve seen this happen to women too many times!)

Trauma is imprinted in our bodies, our nervous systems, and can only be healed with holistic approaches that involve them—not talk therapy, CBT, or psychoanalysis. All these can actually be re-traumatizing: Talking about a traumatic experience without working with the energy of trauma frozen in the body can aggravate the problem.

Not only there’s very little understanding of trauma as a huge factor that underlies anxiety, depression, addiction, relationship problems, health issues, and overall dissatisfaction, lack of clarity, and feeling stuck. The methods that exist to “fix” the problem—self-help, personal growth programs, coaching, and talk therapy often make it worse—unless a practitioner is specifically trained in working with trauma in embodied, holistic ways. In the absence of such a healing approach, women end up on antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs as the only viable “treatment” option. (It was a narrow escape for me—I suffered from incapacitating anxiety, panic attacks, and had two major depressive episodes.)

Women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals are disproportionately affected by “mental health disorders”—depression and anxiety, in particular. Here’s my take on this. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) was written exclusively by straight, cisgender white men and oftentimes pathologies healthy and appropriate reactions to oppression. In a culture where you’ve been oppressed and unsafe for millennia, you’d have to be crazy NOT to feel depressed and anxious.

That’s why I’m on a mission to bring awareness to the Patriarchy Stress Disorder, show how women, men, and people across the gender spectrum are affected by it, and help to heal it. Because if we want to heal the world, we need to start with ourselves.

When we heal the toxic effects of the PSD on our minds, bodies, and actions / choices, most challenging situations and crises resolve. And not just in a way that “fixes the problem”—but in a way that uplevels our whole-life success dramatically, and brings more joy, satisfaction, and fulfillment to our work, relationships, and wellbeing than we ever dreamed of.
